This week, Frenship High School’s Kayci Smith was recently recognized as the May Mrs. Baird’s High School Teacher on the Rise winner. The Mrs. Baird's Teachers on the Rise award is a monthly teacher recognition program across the Lubbock area where students can nominate their teachers for going above and beyond. Each month a different teacher is selected from elementary school, middle school, and high school.
The recognition is especially meaningful to Smith because the nomination came from her nephew, Grant Hougland, a student at Lubbock-Cooper ISD. Though the two are technically on opposite sides of a long-standing school rivalry, their relationship and shared love for cheerleading have built a meaningful bond that surpasses district lines.
“Being named Mrs. Baird's May High School Teacher on the Rise is an incredible honor that fills me with gratitude and humility,” said Smith. “This recognition is especially meaningful because it stems from a student nomination, which is why I do this job. It motivates me to continue striving for excellence in education, ensuring that every student feels seen, heard, and valued.”
In Hougland’s nomination letter, he shared how Smith’s encouragement helped launch his passion for cheerleading.
“For the past two years, I’ve tried out to be on the Laura Bush cheer team, and last year I made it! I was the first male cheerleader in the history of Lubbock-Cooper ISD,” said Hougland. “The main person I wanted to thank was Kayci Smith for not only getting me into this amazing sport but for all of the help and tips she gave me along the way.”
Hougland’s journey into the world of cheerleading began when Smith saw him cheering from the sidelines during a crosstown football game between Frenship and Lubbock-Cooper. She recognized his energy and potential and asked a simple question: “Would you like to meet the Frenship cheerleaders?”
“If it was never for her asking me that question, I might have never tried out for cheer, and I would’ve never had the opportunity to see Frenship in a completely different light,” said Hougland. “She was always there, encouraging me, even when I didn’t make the team. The first person to reach out to comfort me when I didn’t make the 8th grade cheer team was Kayci Smith.”
Smith said their relationship is rooted not only in family, but in shared values of encouragement, perseverance, and positivity.
“Our bond has always been special, rooted in our shared love for cheerleading. From the moment I saw his enthusiasm for the sport as a young child, I knew we had a unique connection. Grant is one of the most precious and kind-hearted individuals I know. His unwavering support and genuine care for others make him everyone's biggest cheerleader,” said Smith.
She added that being nominated by someone who truly knows her heart was the most rewarding part of the award.
“That he took the initiative to nominate me for this award speaks volumes about his character and the strength of our relationship. This recognition is more than just an accolade; it's a testament to the meaningful connections we forge through shared passions and mutual respect,” said Smith. “I'm incredibly grateful to have such a thoughtful and supportive nephew, and this honor will always hold a special place in my heart. Even though our schools are rivals I love, we still support each other!”
Smith’s journey to education began long before she stepped into her own classroom. Inspired by her family of educators and the incredible teachers she had growing up in Frenship ISD, her calling was clear from a young age.
“From as early as second grade, I found myself playing ‘teacher’ instinctively drawn to the role and the joy it brought. Growing up in a family of educators and coaches, the world of teaching was not just familiar, it was foundational,” said Smith.
Reflecting on her journey as both a student and now an educator in the same district, Smith feels grateful and humbled to serve at Frenship.
“I was fortunate to have exceptional teachers at Frenship ISD who made learning an exciting and enriching experience. Their passion and dedication inspired me deeply, instilling in me a love for school and a desire to give back,” said Smith. “Returning to Frenship to teach felt like coming full circle, allowing me to contribute to the same community that shaped me. I'm profoundly thankful for this path, as it enables me to impact students' lives just as my teachers once impacted mine.”
Now, years later, she’s not only teaching in the district that shaped her but also mentoring and cheering on students and peers alike.
“My favorite part about being in the Frenship Family is the genuine sense of community and support that permeates every aspect of our district,” said Smith. “From the moment I joined, I felt embraced by a network of dedicated educators, administrators, students, and families who all share a common goal: to foster an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered.”
That culture of support is something Smith doesn’t take for granted, and it’s what continues to fuel her passion for teaching.
“This culture of encouragement and authenticity is what sets Frenship apart. Here, I’ve felt embraced, encouraged, and celebrated. It’s a place where I’ve been able to take risks, grow, and lean into the community during both the joyful moments and the challenging ones. Frenship really is a family, one that inspires me to give my best, serve wholeheartedly, and pour into others.”
Smith would like to express a heartfelt gratitude for both her nephew and to the Mrs. Baird’s Teacher on the Rise committee.
“Thank you to my sweet nephew Grant for thinking of me and to the committee for this meaningful honor,” said Smith.“I love that there are organizations out there committed to support and applaud educators. We feel seen and so valued. It's an honor to be recognized but more importantly it's a blessing to be able to do what I love in an environment that supports, loves and cheers on their teachers, staff and students.”
As a part of the recognition, Smith received a $100 gift card from United Supermarkets and a meal for two at The Texas Tech Club. As a part of nominating a teacher, Grant Hougland also won a $50 American Express gift card from Mrs. Baird’s. Smith will be honored at the Teacher on the Rise celebration at the end of the school year.
Congratulations, Kayci Smith! We are thankful for your leadership.
