Frenship High School Student Council Attends State Leadership Conference

The Frenship High School Student Council recently attended the annual Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC) Leadership Conference, where they joined thousands of student leaders from across the state to grow their leadership skills, connect with other schools, and bring home inspiring ideas for the upcoming school year.

“TASC is an amazing conference that continues to help leaders learn how to support the people around them while giving tons of fun ideas,” said Student Council President Avery Douglas. “It helped me grow because I got to hear what other schools are doing and take into account the voice of our own student body.”

This year’s conference theme encouraged students to lead with compassion, courage, and creativity. For FHS Student Council Advisor Rebekka Berryhill, the most impactful takeaway was the reminder to listen.

“I think the most important lesson we learned was to listen to one another so we can better meet the needs of our school,” said Berryhill. “The students really bonded and worked together step by step to plan meaningful projects.”

Throughout the conference, students attended breakout sessions and table talks, heard from guest speakers, and shared their own experiences with student leaders from across the state. One highlight this year was learning from schools campaigning for state-level officer positions.

“We loved hearing the different platforms from the schools running for office,” said Berryhill. “One school shared how they’re implementing Sign Language to help support hearing-impaired students. Another talked about their peer mentorship program, which is something we’d like to implement at Frenship.”

While Frenship didn’t run for a state position this year, Avery Douglas had the honor of carrying the District 5 flag during the opening ceremony.

“The most inspiring part for me was getting to hold the flag and represent our district,” said Douglas. “It reminded me how much being a leader can make a difference.”

The team left the conference energized and full of ideas they’re eager to bring to life. Among the top projects on their list is creating a student mentorship program to help peers connect through shared interests. Another student officer even proposed a student-led tutoring program to support classmates in advanced coursework.

Great work, Frenship High School Student Council! We look forward to seeing your new ideas come to life next year.
