Two Frenship High School students in the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) program are advancing to the State FCCLA Competition after their outstanding performances at the recent regional competition last weekend in Lubbock.
Congratulations to Daryl Dissinger, a ninth grader, who competed in the Leadership category, and senior, Mikayla Vasquez, who competed in the Public Policy Advocate category. Both students spent months dedicated to preparing for the regional competition and are looking forward to building upon their skills at the State competition.
"The regional competition was an exciting and rewarding experience for our students," said FCCLA advisor, Trisha Dissinger. "They worked hard to prepare and had the chance to present their projects in front of judges. It was a great learning opportunity, and they gained confidence and public speaking skills."
Daryl and Mikayla began their preparation in October, carefully selecting their events and dedicating months to refining their presentations. Daryl’s project focused on evaluating his leadership skills, working closely with his teachers, coaches, and advisors to create a plan for growth. His efforts pushed him to step outside his comfort zone and take on new leadership opportunities.
Mikayla’s project centered around advocating for a Universal Free Lunch Program for all students. As part of her project, she met with Frenship ISD Superintendent Dr. McCord, sent letters to state senators, and partnered with local food banks to raise awareness about the issue. Her advocacy project demonstrated a strong commitment to creating positive change within her community.
"Advancing to state is a huge accomplishment," said Dissinger. "These two students set an excellent example for their fellow chapter members, showing what’s possible through hard work and dedication. Their success highlights the opportunities that FCCLA competitions can provide, and we hope it encourages more students to compete in the future."
At the State FCCLA Conference, Daryl and Mikayla will compete against top FCCLA members from across Texas, with the opportunity to advance to the National Competition. The state conference will take place April 11-13 at the Anatole in Dallas, Texas.
"I am incredibly proud of both of them! They worked so hard on their projects, gained valuable leadership skills, and represented Frenship with excellence," said Dissinger. "Seeing their faces after they finished presenting to the judges—realizing how proud they were of themselves—was everything. Their dedication and growth throughout this journey have been truly inspiring."
Dissinger believes that being involved in FCCLA is more than just competition, it teaches students about skills that will benefit them throughout their entire life.
"FCCLA is about service, leadership, and building skills for life," said Dissinger. "Our chapter is always looking for ways to give back. Right now, we have students making tie blankets and chemo caps to donate to local cancer patients. We also participate in events like the Frenship High School Trunk or Treat each year. It’s all about growing as individuals while making a difference in the lives of others."
Frenship ISD is incredibly proud of Daryl and Mikayla for their hard work, dedication, and accomplishments, and they look forward to cheering them on at the State FCCLA Competition next month.
