In today’s world, sports extend beyond the traditional physical ball and field. Frenship is proud to host a successful and growing Esports program. Short for electronic sports, Esports is a form of competition that utilizes video games.
This year, the Frenship Esports team has 33 students across eight teams, including a Rocket League Unified Team that has won back-to-back state championships. The Unified Esports team is a part of a gaming competition in partnership with Special Olympics, bringing together students with and without intellectual disabilities to compete in their favorite video games.
Esports Coach, Brain Singletary stated that the student competitors work hard in and out of class to hone their skills. This last week, seven of the Frenship teams competed in their first games of the season.
The teams achieved remarkable success, with six out of seven teams claiming victory. A highlight of the night was that five of the teams completed a shutout against their opponents, winning all three games in their respective rounds.
“The teams were very excited to have won, and were hoping for a full sweep of wins,” said Singletary. “We are slowly warming up. We expect to only get better from here as we get more accustomed to playing on our new teams.”
The teams will compete in their respective games each week as part of the regular season, aiming to build a record strong enough to qualify for the state contest in May. Anyone can watch the matches each week on the Frenship Esports Twitch stream.
The team is excited to host a lock-in stream in the near future to raise money for the UMC Children’s Hospital, along with selling shirts as a fundraiser for the program
