Frenship Floral Design Kicks Off Annual Flower of the Month Club

At Frenship High School, one of the Agricultural Science classes offered to the students is Advanced Floral Design. In this class, students learn to analyze floral designs and prepare floral arrangements for specific occasions.

Students utilize their knowledge in a way that showcases their skills to Frenship staff members who join their Flower of the Month Club.

Each month, the themed arrangements will be designed and arranged by students in the Advanced Floral Design class. This year, Flower of the Month Club members can choose from three options: an eight-month package, a fall-only package, and a spring-only package.

Kelsea Jones, the Advanced Floral Design Teacher at FHS, stated that the program is designed to give students extra experience beyond the financial limits of the class.

“This initiative has provided our students with invaluable lessons in both the business aspects of the floral industry and various design techniques,” said Jones. “I firmly believe that such practical experiences are the most effective form of learning. Additionally, this approach allows students to express their creativity, which differs from the conventional classroom environment.”

Throughout the course, students study the history and principles of floral design, gain insights into the business side of the industry, and learn about the various floral arrangements available in stores and florist shops worldwide. This exposure allows them to practice design techniques taught in the advanced course, mirroring those used in professional floral shops.

When deciding on the design for each month, Jones presents the students with a variety of design ideas and options that align with the theme. Once a decision is made and the flowers are picked up, the students process and care for them in preparation for arranging the designs the following day.

Jones stated that several teachers and staff members throughout the district look forward to the Flower of the Month club each year.

“It’s fantastic that our school district supports the Flower of the Month Club in the Advanced Floral Design course,” said Jones. “Further enhancing our students with educational opportunities.”

The Advanced Floral Design class also benefits from a partnership with United Supermarkets, whose team provides floral design lessons. Several students have even interned at their stores, leading to potential career opportunities in the industry.

This year there are a total of 50 spots available for Frenship ISD administration and staff. Frenship staff members will be given priority. If there is availability after teachers and staff members have signed up, the remaining spots will be opened to the Frenship community.
