Tiger Wrestling Team Takes Down Competition at Recent Tournaments

On November 18, the Boys competed against Northwest Eaton. A total of six wrestlers placed in their weight classes. Noah Zuniga came in first place and was named the Outstanding Wrestler. Aisaiah Lugisse came in second place. Marcelo Trevino and Ethan Neeb-Thomas came in third place in their weight class. Kason Womack and Kyren Ramos came in fourth place in their weight class as well.

Right before the Thanksgiving holiday, the girls competed against Tascosa. Ayiana Wright and Kayden Johnson came in third place in their weight class for the gold bracket. Jazmyn Lee came in second place in her weight class for the silver bracket.

The first tournament hosted at Frenship was the Caprock/Cooper/Liberty Quad Tournament on November 28. The Tigers showed true determination and grit in each match.

“The Boys defeated both Lubbock-Cooper and Lubbock-Liberty. Girls beat Lubbock-Liberty and competed well against the #1 ranked 5-A team in Texas Lubbock-Cooper and #7 ranked 5-A team in Texas, Caprock but fell short of winning,” said Assistant Wrestling Coach, Anna Williams.

This past weekend, the Tigers competed in the District Duals at Northwest Eaton. For the girls, Hannah Demel, Gabby Cardenas, and Ayiana Wright were all undefeated in their four matches. The girls received second place overall at the duals.

“This is a huge accomplishment as they competed against District opponents and helped their team secure points to win the duals to get to the championship,” said Coach Williams.

For the boys, Noah Zuniga went undefeated against his District opponents, giving him an undefeated record so far this season.

“This is huge as we have wrestled good competition. He is having an amazing season thus far with the goal of state as his main focus,” said Coach Williams.

On Tuesday, December 5, the Tigers faced Tascosa and Hereford. Coach Williams is proud of the girls performance and being able to spot areas of improvement.

“The Girls went 1-1 in their duals beating Tascosa and losing to Hereford. We were able to see the little mistakes that hurt us during the matches. The girls realized them too and we are going to work toward minimizing those. Overall, I am very proud of how the girls did compared to the first time we competed against Tascosa and Hereford girls. The guys lost both duals,” said Coach Williams.

Coach Williams is proud of how the wrestlers have taken each match and noted areas where they can improve. Together, the team has grown on the mat and off.

“Each day we are taking steps to be better than we were the day before. Wrestlers have started to buy into the process and hold one another accountable so that has been exciting to watch unfold. Not only are we strengthening our relationships within both teams, our athletes are strengthening their skills on the mat. It is exciting to see our athletes develop and learn from each other as they all grow in the right direction.”
