The Frenship Academic Decathlon team recently competed in their Regional Competition, where the team won first place overall and came in second in the SuperQuiz event.
Academic Decathlon is a competition consisting of ten themed subjects. This year's theme is The American Revolution. Students read extensive, detailed information about certain subjects and then take tests covering the topics. The seven objective subjects are: art, music, science (this year is chemistry), literature (consisting of both a novel and a selection of short stories), social science, math (this year is trigonometry), and economics. They also compete in three subjective events: speech, interview, and essay. They must give a prepared speech on a topic of their choice that is 3.5 to 4 minutes in length, and an impromptu speech that is 1.5 to 2 minutes in length.
Academic Decathlon is a nationally recognized program, and colleges know decathletes are well-rounded students with strong communication and test-taking skills. There are several opportunities for decathletes to earn scholarship monies, both as a team and individually. Top individuals at the state level can earn up to $2,000!
Academic Decathlon sponsor Laura Lewis shared that the students involved on this year's team are Katherine Dyal, Tatum Cameron, Abigail Duncan, Sofia Khan, Ayden Servantez, Elijah Hernandez, Karleigh Rosas, Clarrisa Navarrette, and alternates Maddison Vasquez and Astryd Bergerson.
"AcaDec is a fairly new program to FHS, and we hope to continue to make a name for ourselves as a force to be reckoned with," said Lewis.
The Academic Decathlon team will compete in the State Meet in Frisco, TX at the end of February.
