Frenship High School Floral Students Expand Skills to Balloons

Over the past few years, balloon arches have been rising in popularity for all kinds of events. Because of this trend, FHS floral students are learning the art of making balloon arches.

A huge part of the Floral Industry includes providing services for special occasion events. As a florist it is important to stay up to date with trends and offering balloon arches and balloon creations is a part of that. Balloons are a cheaper alternative to flowers, so this enables the florist or party planner to market a different group of individuals.

Frenship High School has eight Principles of Floral Design classes, all of which learned to make balloon columns and the one Advanced Floral Design Class learned how to make sure the balloons formed the perfect arch. This lesson in balloon design was led by a florist from United Supermarkets, who also provided all the supplies.

United Supermarkets is one of Frenship’s community partners, and a part of that partnership they regularly send industry professionals to meet with floral students. They go to campus several times during the year to do specific lessons including balloon mechanics, creating bud vases and creating corsages and boutonnieres as well as wedding bouquets.

“It was so much fun watching the kids create these balloon arrangements, they learned the mechanics of how to properly blow balloons up, shape them, preserve them and assemble them into specific creations.” said floral teacher, Kelsea Jones. “It was a great learning experience for the students and for myself.”

The floral classes will go to a United Supermarkets store in November to learn additional industry skills.
