Frenship Girls and Boys Golf Compete in Regional Preview Tournament

The boys team finished the first day of the tournament in seventh place but ended up coming back the second day to finish the tournament in fourth place. Frenship’s top scorer, Logan Vargas, finished in ninth place individually.

Frenship Boys Golf Coach Daniel McDonald said the Regional Preview Tournament is played with some of the best teams in Region I.

“Class 6A Region I is widely thought of as the very best high school golf in Texas,” McDonald said. “Our guys know the challenge ahead of them and they are certainly up to that task.”

McDonald said he knows that even with the tough competition his team will go far.

“There are eight teams that have a realistic chance of sending kids to the 6A State Championships in May,” McDonald said, “and Frenship is definitely one of them.”

The girls also competed in the Regional Preview Tournament in Grand Prairie and though they did not place during the tournament, Coach Roger Whipkey is confident that they will take this tournament and learn from it.

“I saw a lot of really good things from the girls,” Whipkey said. “Individually, our top player was Lainey Cristan, who has signed to play golf with Loyola of New Orleans. She shot a terrific score of 76 the first day and followed up with an 83 the second day.”

Whipkey said the weekend after Spring Break his girls will play in the Andrews Spring Classic Tournament and quickly after will compete in the District Tournament in Midland on March 22 and 23.

“I really like how the team is shaping up and that we are peaking at just the perfect time,” Whipkey said. “Our district is probably the toughest it has ever been since I have been at Frenship, and we are going to have to play really well to make it to Regionals, but I really feel that we are up to the challenge.”
