Students and staff played during their lunch period, before and after school, and during their conference periods.
Two weeks of intense competition culminated with the following students as the winners:
Aryan Roghani - First Place
Sophia Chandler - Second Place
Seth Simon - Third Place
The top three finishers were awarded medals and chess related prize. Mr. Burrus won the staff division, and faced the student winner, Aryan Roghani, in a best of three face-off to determine the school champion.
Aryan emerged victorious, after the tie breaking third game, capitalizing on a mistake made by Burrus.
A special thanks to our Community in Schools liaison, Ms. Victoria Zepeda for hosting the chess club, mentoring the players, and playing in the tournament.
During the second semester, the NGC will hold a tournament each six weeks to keep their skills sharp. They are adding a blitz division for those brave enough to play five minute games. Rumor has it that Principal Simpson himself will be participating in future tournaments!
