Frenship Band members comprised over 185 of those entries performing both solos and small ensembles for UIL judges.

Each student may enter up to two events at the UIL Contest, and they have been practicing their solo and/or ensemble since November in preparation for this competition. UIL judges from across the state heard lots of great music and critiqued each performance on elements of tone quality, technique, and musicianship.

The Frenship Band staff believe building individual musicianship in each student is the most important aspect of their music education. “When our students perform independently or with a small chamber ensemble, it really increases their ability to listen, tune, and be a better musician.”, said Scott Carter, Associate Director of Bands. “When it’s just one person playing a solo, or maybe 3 to 4 people in an ensemble, it requires lots of responsibility and a great work ethic to practice, stay eligible, and perform at their best.”

Members of the Frenship Band earned 128 medals at the contest, qualifying 51 soloists and 21 ensembles to the UIL Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest to be held at UT-Austin in June. Those who have qualified for the state championships will get to perform for many college professors from around the state. “These are great opportunities for our students. Many times, they will ask our students to come audition for their school of music. Students can receive scholarships to college just for playing their instrument,” said Director of Bands, Tom SoRelle. “We are so proud of their hard work!”
