Girls Golf Wins District Championship

It was a tale of two rounds for the Frenship girls golf team last week as they fought for the District 2-6A crown at Texas Tech’s Rawls Course. But after a slow start that left work to be done, FHS managed to put together a comeback for the ages to claim the district championship.

FHS found themselves in third place after an opening round team of 343, ten shots behind leader Odessa Permian. Brooklyn Nix carded the team’s lowest score of the round with an 83.

Round two would be a different story.

Three Tigers – Kaitlyn Gossett (75), Steffanie Roldan (78) and Nix (79) – fired rounds in the seventies, and the play of teammates Lainey Cristan and Loren Abernathy helped FHS put together a team score of 316 to overcome the deficit and win the tournament by two strokes. Their two-day team score of 659 was two shots better than Permian at 661.

“We played out of our minds and shot the second-best team round in school history at the hardest course we have ever played district to win the Championship, said FHS golf coach Roger Whipkey. “I am so proud of the kids.”

Individually, Gossett placed fourth overall with a two-day score of 161 (86-75). Nix was fifth with 162 (83-79), Roldan was sixth with 165 (87-78) and Cristan was tenth with 171 (87-84).

The team advances to the Class 6A Region I Tournament set for April 22-23 at the Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie.
