Tiger Sports Roundup: Soccer, Powerlifting, Tennis and Golf

Congratulations to our Tiger athletes for their many success last week. Here’s a look at some of the highlights:

GIRLS SOCCER

FHS kept their district unbeaten and unscored upon streak alive Friday as the Tigers beat Midland Lee 5-0. Maddie Hoel scored two goals while Natalie Jones, Aryial García and Katelin Heise each added a goal as well. Lexi Jackson pitched another shutout in goal.

FHS is now 14-2-2 on the year and 6-0 in district. They have outscored district opponents 31-0 in six games. Their next game is at home on Tuesday versus Tascosa. The match begins at 7:30 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

The Tigers bounced back from their first district loss a week ago and beat Midland Lee 2-0 Friday night in Midland. Caleb Rogers scored the first goal of the night just before halftime, and Ryan Maldonado added the game-clinching goal late in the contest. Goalkeeper Joseph Cervantes preserved the shutout and the win.

“It was very pleasing to see our defending in this game,” said head coach Scott Smith. “We know we’re going to score every game so tightening up defensively was our main focus, and the boys delivered a strong reassuring defensive display.”

The Tigers are 10-2-2 (4-1-1) and host Tascosa Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

TENNIS

Congratulations to the Tiger mixed doubles team of Braden Tipton and Camryn Stepp who won the Midland Tall City Invitational. After beating a team from El Paso Coronado in the first round (6-1, 6-2), they won matches against a team from Coppell (6-4, 6-0) and Abilene Wylie (6-2, 6-0). They won the championship against a team from Soutlake Carroll (6-7, 6-2, 6-2).

POWERLIFTING

Congratulations to Frenship powerlifter Laiken Turner who placed fourth in her weight class and teammate Rosalina Gomez who placed fifth in her weight class during the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s Region I Division I Meet Saturday at Midland Greenwood High School. With their top finishes, both Turner and Gomez qualified to lift at the THSWPA State Meet in Waco on Saturday, March 16.

Other Tiger athletes who competed well Saturday included Madison Olmos, Viri Gomez and Natashia Hernandez. All competed well and improved their personal records.

The Tiger boys who qualified for THSPA Regional Powerlifting Meet will compete this Saturday, March 9 at Plainview. FHS qualifiers include Case Dickey, Julian Rios, Julian Flores, Cody Barker and Kevin Sanders.

BOYS GOLF

The Frenship boys golf team placed fifth this weekend in a DFW Metroplex tournament that featured many of the top 6A schools from the region. Junior Brian Boles placed second individually with a one under par total of 143 (72-71).

The team will head to DFW again this weekend to participate in the Class 6A Region I Preview at Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie. After Spring Break, the District 2-6A Championships will be held at the Rawls Course at Texas Tech on March 25-26.
